Final Dash
One of the last things on the dash was the choke control. It runs
from he left dash panel over to the right side of the car, and it's
pretty tight back there, so the center panel can't really be installed
until it's in place. I messed with the original cable assembly,
and got it looking good and working pretty well, but during install, I
managed to displace one of the strands of one of the inner cables, which
caused it to stick and bind.
So, I ordered a new cable. This turned out to be a good thing,
since I was happy to find that the new one was much more flexible than
the old one, making it easier to route in the crowded space behind the
dash.
The install wasn't without some other heartache though. There is a
dash brace that connects between the metal dash base and a steering
column bracket. It stabilizes the dash quite a lot, but since the
stock one fouled one of the new rocker switches, I had to make a new one
to provide better clearance. But, since no good idea goes
unpunished, I found that the new brace fouled the barrel of the choke
cable. So, the modified brace got another modification by moving
it up by about a half inch.
That finished up everything behind the dash, so the center panel could then be fully installed.
As a final little flourish, the re-made lower crash pad was pulled down off the almost bare parts shelf.
Everything finally buttoned up. I really hope I don't have to do any more work back there.
The dash and it's related parts were a major part of the work on this
project. It also marks the completion of the interior of the car.
The only cost for this final work was around $60 for the choke cable.
