Front Grille
Sort of marking time until we have better weather, I rifled
through the pile of crusty GT6 parts from when I disassembled the
car. I came up with the front grille.
The grille is a pretty simple assembly, consisting of just a pair
of anodized aluminum extrusions riveted to a bent bracket in the
middle, forming a shallow V. Each of the extrusions is
actually slightly curved. The grille was really dirty and
dinged, but was all there.
The steel tie bracket at the center was heavily rusted, and some
of the aluminum rivets had corroded away.
Drilling out the remaining rivets freed up the extrusions.
It seemed easier to just make a new center bracket than to clean
up the original one. I made it it out of aluminum, which
would have been a better choice in the first place. It is
bent to form an angle of about 165ยบ between the wings.
Used the extrusions as a template to drill the rivet holes, and
did a test assembly.
Then took it back apart, cleaned everything well, prepped for
paint, and masked the parts I wanted to stay shiny. I shot
everything with a 2 part black epoxy primer.
The next day, I assembled the pieces, and top-coated with a
semi-matte black.
This was sort of a trivial project, but one of the more visible
ones. It took a few hours total, and the cost was just for
some consumables.
Now, on to something more interesting...
